  17. <p>     To the ever expanding lexicon of corporate jargon you may
  18. now add "risk-sharing partnership." That's how Boeing chairman
  19. Frank Shrontz describes arrangements like the one between his
  20. company and Germany's Deutsche Airbus/Deutsche Aerospace, which
  21. announced plans for a joint research effort last week. The risk
  22. the two giant jetmakers may share: development of a supersonic
  23. high-speed civil transport, an updated and larger Concorde-type
  24. airliner that could whisk 300 passengers at twice the speed of
  25. sound.

  27. <p>     Boeing has also signed a memorandum of understanding with
  28. France's Thomson CSF stating that the two companies will work
  29. together on aerospace products. Such alliances with potential
  30. competitors are a reaction to the giant cost of the next
  31. generation of airliners and the giant marketplace of post-1992
  32. Europe. Other companies seem likely to heed the new lesson: If
  33. you can't beat 'em, join 'em--and share the risk.
